Enjoy the roof-top pool with magnificent view of the Acropolis! On our first evening we will have a welcome reception with an opportunity for everyone to get acquainted and to sample some traditional Greek “mezedes,” before heading out for a special welcome dinner. On the next day explore the “must see” sights of Athens on privately guided walking tour including the ACROPOLISACROPOLIS MUSEUM , Ancient Agora, the Plaka, and the Metro with its treasures.  Flight to Chania, Crete.

CHANIA (Hania, Xania): 3 nights

Chania is a picturesque old Venetian port city. We’ll be staying in the old port in a small historic pension-style hotel on a pedestrian street. After checking in, enjoy a walking tour of town and discover why Chania is considered to be one of Greece’s most beautiful cities. Enjoy a delicious, healthy traditional Cretan welcome dinner at a small local restaurant. Learn Greek dancing! Our accommodations are at a traditional styled inn in the village of Archanes.  Ferry to Santorini.

Enjoy a privately guided minibus tour of the island, including the PREHISTORIC MUSEUMAKROTIRI ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE, the medieval village of Pyrgos and a wine tasting at one of the islands finest small winery. The group will meet at the Athens airport in Greece at 12 noon for transfer to our hotel in Athens. Although airfare is NOT included we will gladly help with making your flight arrangements. Also we can help you with any pre or post tour arrangements in Greece and beyond. If you will be traveling from a long distance away such as the west coast of US or Canada, or from Australia or New Zealand arriving a day or two early is recommended.

The tour price includes private tours by our expert official Greek tourist board guides of the Acropolis, the Acropolis Museum, the Ancient Agora, the Plaka area, a walking tour of Chania, Knossos archaeological site, the Heraklion Museum, Akrotiri Archaeological site and Santorini Island tour.  We will join a larger group for a guided tour of the Island of Delos. Also your tour leader will lead a hike along the caldera on Santorini and an orientation walk in Mykonos. Other tours are optional and can be prearranged for you by the tour director. Optional activities include Greek cooking class (€135), scuba diving, boat excursions, etc. For the optional Samaria Gorge hike we have reserved an amazing local naturalist to join us (€115-145). This itinerary offers flexibility so that you can choose activities to fill everyday or you can just relax and enjoy the beaches and the local atmosphere. Even if you choose not to partake in additional tours your WanderWoman tour director will provide insights into Greek history and culture. Prices for optional activities may vary.

The tour is escorted by Erja Lipponen, Founder/Owner of Eurynome Journeys, who will attend to details to assure you a hassle-free vacation. Erja has traveled to Greece numerous times over the past 36 years, both leading groups and as a solo traveler.  She looks forward to sharing some of her favorite places in Greece with you and discovering new favorites. On days that are “at leisure,” Erja will be available to arrange activities, recommend restaurants, and lead optional hikes/walks. On all days a meeting time will be set for those wishing to get together for dinner. Visit our “About Us” page to learn more about our small group tours and about Erja.

Wherever possible, Erja has selected smaller quaint hotels and inns with local ambiance, rather than typical “package tour ” hotels. Each hotel is within walking distance to restaurants, shops, and points of interest – givng you freedom to explore right out the door! Our hotel in Santorini is located on the caldera a short distance from town and has complimentary shuttle service into town. The accommodations range for a 5-star boutique hotel in the heart of the historic center of Athens to a charming pensione-style property in the scenic old port of Chania in Crete. Each room is different, but all the rooms have private baths, direct dial telephones, and TVs. Some of the hotels do not have elevators (but have lots of stairs), so be prepared to carry what you pack. Backpack-style or small-wheeled suitcases are recommended since the segments from Heraklion to Santorini (2.5 hours) and from Santorini to Mykonos (2.75 hours) will be traveled by ferry. In Athens and Heraklion the group will stay at larger hotels that have been chosen for their locations and amenities (roof-top pools, etc).

Read about the Wall Frescos of Thera

The discovery of the wall-paintings of Akrotiri , Thera, in the excavations (1967-1974) of Professor Spyridon Marinatos is of outstanding importance for our knowledge of the early Aegean world. It ranks alongside Schliemann’s opening of the Shaft Graves of Mycenae in 1876 and Evan’s uncovering of the Palace of Knossos with its collections of inscribed tablets in 1900.

The THERA FOUNDATION, a non-profit organization that was created in 1969, by Mr. Peter M. Nomikos, maintains an exhibit of these beautiful frescos. The foundation’s purpose is to promote the study of archaeology, geology, art history and other cultural events as they pertain to Greece and Santorini in the context of the Mediterranean. The many of the frescos can now be seen in the Prehistory Museum in Thira town.
