Small Group (max 10) Greek Islands Travel for Women

ATHENS: 2 nights

Athens is the cultural center of Greece. We’ll be staying at a beautiful 5* boutique hotel in the heart of the PLAKA, the old city, beneath the Acropolis and walking distance to restaurants and shops. Enjoy the roof-top pool with magnificent view of the Acropolis! On our first evening we will have a welcome reception with an opportunity for everyone to get acquainted, before heading out for a special welcome dinner. On the next day explore the “must see” sights of Athens on privately guided walking tour including the ACROPOLISACROPOLIS MUSEUM , and the Plaka with its numerous monuments.  Flight to Chania, Crete.

CHANIA (Hania, Xania): 3 nights

Chania is a picturesque old Venetian port city. We’ll be staying in the old port at a small, historic, pension-style hotel on a pedestrian street. After checking in, enjoy a walking tour of town and discover why Chania is considered to be one of Greece’s most beautiful cities. Enjoy a delicious, healthy traditional Cretan welcome dinner at a small local restaurant. Learn Greek dancing! You’ll have an opportunity to hike one of Crete’s GORGES and swim in the Libyan Sea or explore Chania’s charms. Optional activities that can be arranged locally include a cooking class and boat excursions.  Minibus transfer to Archanes village near Heraklion (2.5 hrs)

ARCHANES (Heraklion, Iraklion, Iraklio): 2 nights

We will stay in a village within a short distance from Heraklion, the modern-day, bustling capital city of Crete. Over the next 2 days enjoy private tours with our local Cretan guide.  First we will tour fantastic KNOSSOS, a palace complex associated with the legendary King Minos, built by Europe’s first civilization, a goddess worshipping culture. After touring, we’ll have a special dinner at a country house at a nearby village.  Next day we’ll tour the beautifully displayed artifacts of the HERAKLION MUSEUM, which re-opened in May 2014. Our accommodations are  traditional-styled for an authentic taste of local culture.  Each is a small apartment, some with kitchenettes, facing a central courtyard and within walking distance to tavernas, shops, and points of interest.   Morning ferry to Santorini (2 hrs).

SANTORINI (Thera, Fira, Thira): 3 nights

This is perhaps the most spectacular of all the islands in Greece. Stay in a luxury hotel perched on the edge of the volcanic cliff of the CALDERA.  Your breakfast will be served on your private balcony overlooking the sea. We begin with a privately guided minibus tour of the island, including the PREHISTORIC MUSEUMAKROTIRI ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE, a short walking tour of the medieval village of Pyrgos and a wine tasting at one of the islands finest, small wineries. On our second day, hike along the caldera (optional) to the quaint village of Oia at island’s the northern tip. On our final full day in Santorini, we will cruise by private catamaran in the caldera for a different perspective of this island, believed by some to be Plato’s lost Atlantis. Ferry to  Mykonos (2.5 hrs) and then to Tinos (30 min).

TINOS: 4 nights

This quaint island offers small villages perched on hillsides, beaches, hikes, delicious cuisine, and the main town has a charming old quarter. However, Tinos is still virtually untouched by mass tourism.   You’ll see no big cruise ships taxiing in thousands of day trippers and no big bus tour groups queuing to get into sites as on the better known islands. Yet there are numerous fabulous restaurants, lovely accommodations, beautiful natural scenery, and even some very good wineries. On our first full day, we beginning our exploration of the island with a half-day minibus tour with our local guide, visiting villages, learning about  local crafts, sampling Tinian wines and local specialties.  Our traditional-style hotel has a pool and spa, and is a 20-minute walk from town and only 5 minutes from a small beach with restaurants.   Although undiscovered by the hordes, Tinos is a short ferry ride from the glamorous island of Mykonos. Thus an optional excursion to Mykonos can be easily arranged or a post-tour extension. On our last evening we’ll gather for a farewell dinner at one of Tinos’ fine restaurants. Our tour concludes with a morning ferry to Rafina port and transfer to Athens International Airport in time for evening flights home. Optional nights near the airport or a Mykonos extension can be arranged.

Mykonos 2-night or 3-night Add-on: For those wishing to experience Mykonos, we can arrange a ferry transfer to Mykonos, port pick up to the hotel, 2 or 3 nights accommodations at family-run, Myconian-style hotel with a spa and pool, or at a more basic property, both on the edge of Mykonos town within a few minutes walk to points of interest.  Ending with a transfer to the airport and flight to Athens international airport in time for early afternoon flights home.  Pricing available upon request.

HOTELS

Each hotel is within walking distance to restaurants, shops, and points of interest – givng you freedom to explore right out the door! The accommodations range for a 5-star boutique hotel in the heart of the historic center of Athens to a charming pensione-style property in the scenic old port of Chania in Crete. Some of the hotels do not have elevators (but have lots of stairs), so be prepared to carry what you pack. Read about the Wall Frescos of Thera

The discovery of the wall-paintings of Akrotiri , Thera, in the excavations (1967-1974) of Professor Spyridon Marinatos is of outstanding importance for our knowledge of the early Aegean world. It ranks alongside Schliemann’s opening of the Shaft Graves of Mycenae in 1876 and Evan’s uncovering of the Palace of Knossos with its collections of inscribed tablets in 1900.

The THERA FOUNDATION, a non-profit organization that was created in 1969, by Mr. Peter M. Nomikos, maintains an exhibit of these beautiful frescos. The foundation’s purpose is to promote the study of archaeology, geology, art history and other cultural events as they pertain to Greece and Santorini in the context of the Mediterranean. The many of the frescos can now be seen in the Prehistory Museum in Thira town.
