Monday is a good day for day trips outside the city since many sites in Rome are closed. If you’ve been to Pompeii, consider a guided walking tour of the Appian Way and the Catacombs or Hadrian’s Villa and Tivoli (both are full-day excursions)Or just meander about Rome, visiting churches and parks and discovering more of Rome’s endless treasures on your own or with a tour escort. Afterward, those wishing to continue in the celebration are invited to attend the late-night parade originating at Piazza del Popolo or watch the fireworks from our hotel rooftop. (B, D)

DAY 5  New Year’s Day in Rome

As many places are closed for the holiday, it makes for a nice day to relax, explore the Ville Borghese Gardens and the churches of Rome, and enjoy local traditions. At the church Santa Maria at Piazza del Popolo, traditional nativity scenes, “Persepi,” are displayed, and performers dressed in brightly colored customs entertain the Roman children. Romans follow along as the Rome New Year’s Parade makes its way through the streets, flocking into St. Peter’s Square for the Pope’s blessing. Tens of thousands of people attend this annual tradition. New Year’s is an excellent time to meander from piazza to piazza of the Eternal City. (B,L)

The holidays are a festive time in Rome. The weather in Rome in the winter months is mild. Average temperatures range between mid-40s F and mid-50s F. Our travel groups are NOT motor coach tours, although occasionally, we use minibusses for locally guided tours included in the itineraries. Guided tours of the major attractions and some of Rome’s less-known treasures are included. The best way to experience Rome is on foot, so bring comfy walking shoes. The pace of the itinerary is leisurely, with ample time to relax or explore more. In addition to included sightseeing, extra tours can be arranged locally. Group size is limited to 12 women. A knowledgeable group organizer will accompany each group to ensure you a stress-free vacation. So whether you are a first-time traveler or a seasoned veteran, we invite you to join us on our New Year’s Escape to Rome!

Although airfare is NOT included, we will gladly help make your flight arrangements. We can also assist you with any pre- or post-tour arrangements in Rome and beyond. Private transfers to our hotel in the center of Rome from Fiumicino Airport (FCO) in Rome, Italy, on 28 Dec. between 8 am and 4 pm are included in the tour price.

The tour price includes privately guided walking tours with official Italian tourist board guides of Ancient Rome, including entrance into the Roman Forum and Colosseum. A privately guided tour of the Villa Borghese Villa Gallery, a walking tour of some of Rome’s Hidden Treasures, and an opportunity for wine tasting. The pace is leisurely, with time to explore or partake in optional excursions such as a day trip to Pompeii or Tivoli Gardens.

We avoid the typical group tour-oriented hotels and stay at smaller quaint hotels and inns with local ambiance. In Rome, Erja has selected her favorite hotel in the heart of Rome, a smaller boutique-style property near the Spanish Steps and Villa Borghese Gardens (a lovely place for morning walks or jogs). The hotel is within walking distance to restaurants, shops, and points of interest – allowing you to explore right out the door! All the rooms have private baths, direct-dial telephones, and TVs.
