GIZA 2 nights

Our journey in Egypt begins in Giza, the site to the Pyramids (the last remaining ancient wonder of the world). At our 5-star hotel the pyramids provide a dramatic backdrop. On the first evening enjoy a WELCOME RECEPTION and get acquainted with fellow travelers. The next day, our first full day in Egypt, we will be joined by our local Egyptologist for a fascinating private tour of the GREAT PYRAMIDS and the SPHINX. In the afternoon visit the SOLAR BOAT and SAKKARA. Learn not only about the Pharaohs, but also the Queens of Egypt who attainted levels of power unparalleled anywhere else in the ancient times. Evening at leisure to relax. Next day travel by mini-bus (2.5 hours) to the beautiful city of Alexandria located on the Mediterranean Sea.

ALEXANDRIA 2 nights

This city, founded by Alexander the Great, is where Cleopatra ruled; and where Hypatia, the brilliant female philosopher, headed the Neoplatonic Academy. The famous Library of Alexandria is now lost, but the BIBLIOTECA (new Library of Alexandria) is a modern marvel not to be missed. In the harbor, at the site of Quait Bay Fort, once stood a magnificent lighthouse, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Visit POMPEY’S PILLAR, the Greco-Roman CATACOMBS and the NATIONAL MUSEUM. See the CITADEL OF QAUITBEI, and the MONTZAH PALACE. Our hotel is on the Mediterranean Sea with a beach for relaxing before traveling on to Cairo the bustling capital of Egypt.

CAIRO 4 nights

In Cairo our “boutique-style” hotel with Nile view rooms and a spa is like an oasis in the middle of the city center. Explore the collection of ancient treasures found throughout Egypt at the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities with our Egyptologist. Afternoon at leisure or optional shopping excursion. In the evening meet with local women. The next morning enjoy a WALKABOUT the old Islamic section of Cairo with our local architectural specialist and visit a beautifully restored Ottoman residence and see the women’s quarters, commonly known as the harem. Afterwards enjoy the afternoon exploring the famous Khan el-Khalili Bazaar. Flight to Luxor, the site of ancient Thebes. Travel by camel at the pyramids of Giza in Egypt

LUXOR 1 night

After checking in at our 5-star hotel spend a leisurely afternoon exploring with your tour escort and visit local shops. Evening tour of the TEMPLE OF LUXOR and the LUXOR MUSEUM with finds gathered from the temples of the ancient city of Thebes. A new room added in 2004 houses the ROYAL MUMMIES. Next morning embark on a DELUXE NILE RIVER CRUISE to gain a different perspective of Egypt. See villages along the Nile that have changed little since the Egyptian Queen Cleopatra sailed the Nile presenting Egypt’s many wonders to Julius Caesar.
See the Temple of Hatshepsut, the female Pharoh of ancient Egypt

NILE RIVER CRUISE 4 nights

The elegant 5-star cruise boat, Sonesta Saint George , will be our base for exploring the banks of the Nile River and its fascinating temples and monuments. Tour the amazing temple complex of KARNAK on the EAST BANK. The next day explore the WEST BANK’s VALLEY OF THE KINGS & QUEENS, and the majestic temple of the female pharaoh HATSHEPSUT at El-Deir and the COLOSSI OF MEMNON. Then cruise to EDFU where the temple of the god Horus is located. Next sail to KOM OMBO and visit the temple of the gods Sobek & Haeroris. On the last day of our Nile cruise visit the HIGH DAM, the TEMPLE OF PHILAE & the unfinished OBELISK. Transfer to hotel.

ASWAN 1 night

This is perhaps one of the most pleasant cities in Egypt. Our 5-star hotel is on a small island in the middle of the Nile. The hotel is within a short ferry ride into town. Enjoy an evening FELUCCA sailing to ELEPHANTINE ISLAND. Next day tour the NUBIAN MUSEUM. From Aswan fly to the amazing ABU SIMBEL archaeological site, which has massive twin temples originally carved into a mountain side by Ramesses II in the 13th century BC, as a monument to himself and his beautiful queen Nefertari, whose name means “beautiful companion.” A MUST SEE! Return to Cairo for last night.

Your WanderWoman Tour Leaders

The Egyptian tour is escorted by Erja Lipponen, founder of Eurynome Journeys, or Kim Childs, our Egyptian specialist. Kim has led and organized numerous groups to Egypt and the holy land. She traveled to Egypt for the first time during high school, when she was selected as an A.F.S. exchange student. The warm welcome Kim received from her Egyptian host family in Cairo endeared Egypt and its people to her. Egypt beckoned once again during her university years, when she returned to study at the American University in Cairo for more than a year, which inspired a dream of incorporating Egypt and travel into her future life’s work. Working as a freelance program director for a large tour operator Kim was able to incorporate her love of Egypt into her work. This, in turn, led to Kim meeting her husband, who also shared her passion for travel and the Middle East in particular – and to their co-founding and running a travel business together for several years. Kim now resides on an island in Maine with her husband and two young children. We are thrilled to have Kim on the Wanderwoman team!

WHAT TO EXPECT

The pace is leisurely providing time to “feel” Egypt and not merely run through it, yet we’ve included the major attractions and a few special surprises. Some days are full from the crack of dawn (sight-seeing is best before the afternoon heat) until after dinner, but other days have free time for optional activities or for rest and reflection. Since travel in Egypt can be rigorous we’ve selected very comfortable hotels (mostly deluxe 5-stars) that offer spas or other rejuvenating amenities, yet are close to shops, restaurants, and other attractions for those who want to explore. To visit Egypt and only see tombs and temples would give an incomplete picture of this fascinating country, so the tour also explores modern day life in Egypt, especially the lives of women. This itinerary involves a considerable amount of walking and requires a certain degree of physical fitness. Included tours are half-day to full-day in duration and some are under the hot Egyptian sun and on the uneven terrain of archaeological excavations. Participants must be able to walk 2 to 5 miles. Comfortable walking shoes, a sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and an ability to enjoy cultural differences are essential. A packing list, helpful travel information, and a suggested reading list will be provided.

Note: This is an active travel vacation and is NOT suitable for those with limited mobility and/or poor health. All group activities and group meals are NON-SMOKING.

Eurynome Journeys/Leisure Markets Inc., reserves the right to change the itinerary and make substitutions at anytime to ensure the safety and comfort of the group or as deemed necessary by the tour director. Although the tour has been carefully planned circumstances may require changes to the itinerary. Prices are subject to availability at time of booking.

We highly recommend that you purchase travel insurance for the total cost of the trip as soon as possible. For best coverage options insurance should be purchase NO later than 14 days after your deposit. Insurance can be purcased through your insurance company, Leisure Markets Inc, or online at TRAVEL GUARD.
